Katherine Watkinson is a clinical instructor for veterinary clinical skills and surgery. She graduated from the University of Leeds reading Zoology with a year in industry as an animal keeper in a safari park. This involved working predominantly with lions, tigers, bears, wolves and asian elephants. Following her year in industry she focused her studies on behavioral genetics, before graduation. In addition to this, Katherine also gained experience working in a contract research organization before focusing on completing a second degree. She attended the Royal Veterinary College studying veterinary medicine. During this time she took up employment as a stockman on a farm, working mainly with swine but also gained husbandry experience with sheep and dairy cattle.
After qualifying as a veterinary surgeon she worked in several practices in the UK and Channel Islands as a small animal clinician. This included a hospital working a mixture of daytime and out of hours, providing both routine and emergency care for small animals and exotic species.
Following her time in the UK, she moved to the Cayman Islands to take up a position as the shelter veterinarian for the Cayman Islands Humane Society, before starting employment at St Matthews University of Veterinary Medicine.
Her areas of interest lie in small animal surgery, exotic medicine, emergency medicine and education. The latter led to her taking up the position of Clinical Instructor in September 2023.
St. Matthew's curriculum was designed by U.S.-based faculty and parallels training at top U.S. medical schools. It involves ten semesters of concentrated academic and clinical study split between Basic Sciences and Clinical Sciences.
