U.S. Clinical Rotations for SMUSVM Veterinary Students
The SMUSVM Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program features seven semesters of classroom and lab-based learning on our Grand Cayman campus, followed by three semesters of clinical rotations at an affiliated veterinary school in the United States, Canada or the United Kingdom.
During these Clinical Medicine rotations, successful DVM students work alongside fourth-year North American or U.K. students and engage directly with diverse animal patients. Together, they will learn directly from knowledgeable instructors and utilize cutting-edge technology to address a variety of conditions.
Admissions Requirements for U.S. Students
For U.S. applicants to create a successful application to SMUSVM, their submission must include:
- Official transcript(s)
- Two Letters of Recommendation
- Personal statement (500 words or less)
Please note that courses are delivered in English and attendees must be prepared to communicate effectively.
SMUSVM has three start dates each year; students can apply to begin in January, May or September.

FAQs About Studying Veterinary Medicine in the Caribbean
Attending SMUSVM brings a variety of benefits for U.S. students, including cost-effective tuition, available seats in the DVM program, U.S. scholarships, and the opportunity to train and practice back home. Grand Cayman, the home of our Basic Science campus, is also notably modern and offers many amenities that will have U.S. students feeling right at home.
U.S. students who are transferring into the SMUSVM DVM program may be eligible to transfer credits from their previous program. However, St. Matthew’s University reserves the right to make the final decision on transfer course eligibility.
St. Matthew’s University School of Veterinary Medicine (SMUSVM) is situated on Grand Cayman, the largest of the Cayman Islands (in the Caribbean). The Cayman Islands are only a one-hour flight from Miami, FL, and are accessible via direct-flights from many major U.S. cities.
Yes, students live on Grand Cayman for 2+ years during the Basic Science portion of the DVM program (seven semesters).
