How to apply for St. Matthew's University School of Veterinary Medicine?

In addition to your application and fee, you will need to submit the following documents to complete the application process:


1. Transcripts: Official transcript(s) from each college/university or professional school you attended. Student-issued copies may suffice, pending official transcripts.

2. Personal statement: The personal statement should indicate (A) your purpose for considering a career in veterinary medicine, (B) why you would be an asset to St. Matthew's University School of Veterinary Medicine, (C) your significant activities or accomplishments, personal interests, unique aspects of your pre-veterinary preparation and any additional information that would help the Admissions Committee in the evaluation of your application. (A maximum of 500 words is recommended to answer these questions). You may attach your personal statement to your online application.

3. Resume: Your current resume is required, and you may attach it to your online application.

4. Letters of recommendation: Two letters of recommendation are required. Evaluations from a college pre-veterinary medical committee are accepted in lieu of individual letters. 

5. TOEFL: Applicants whose principal language is not English may be required to take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). More information on TOEFL can be found at the official TOEFL test site.

Veterinary School Requirements

Veterinary School Course Requirements

SMUSVM requires the following prerequisite courses:
General Biology*

One academic year
(6 credit hours)
Biochemistry

1/2  academic year
(3 credit hours)
Organic Chemistry* †

1/2 academic year
(3 credit hours)
General Chemistry

One academic year
(6 credit hours)
College Math or Computer Science

1/2 academic year
(3 credit hours)
Language Arts (English)**

1/2 academic year
(3 credit hours)
These courses must include an attached laboratory.
** A student may substitute any course that has a writing component, such as a term paper or written project, for the Language Arts requirement.
A student may substitute 1/2 year of Biochemistry for 1/2 year of Organic Chemistry.

English Language Veterinary School Requirement

Since English is the language of instruction at SMUSVM, it is important that applicants be prepared academically to pursue the curriculum and be able to communicate effectively. Applicants whose principal language is not English may be required to take the test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).

Veterinary Admissions Test

There is no standardized examination required for admission. However, the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test is recommended.
