Profiles in Success: Yash Patel, DVM
Gain insights and advice from an international Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) program graduate.
Founded in 2005, St. Matthew’s University School of Veterinary Medicine (SMUSVM) is where future veterinarians develop their passion for animal health and commitment to care.
DVM program students study Basic Science on safe and modern Grand Cayman, one of the top destinations in the Caribbean, where they engage in early training experiences with small, large and more rare aquatic animals. They can then undertake clinical rotations at an affiliated veterinary school in the U.S., Canada or the United Kingdom.
Notably, our diverse and welcoming learning environment is perfect for international students, such as recent graduate Yash Patel, who was born in England and now works at Dale City Animal Hospital in Virginia, U.S.
Dr. Patel has generously shared highlights from his veterinary school journey and offered key guidance for future practitioners – we thank him for supporting the next generation of veterinarians!

What inspired you to pursue a career in veterinary medicine, and as an international student, how did you first hear about SMUSVM?
“From an early age, I was fascinated by the animal kingdom. I explored a variety of career paths, from zoologist to park ranger, and even dreamed of becoming the next David Attenborough. However, my path became clear after shadowing at a veterinary clinic in Northern England. During my very first appointment, I witnessed a euthanasia and saw firsthand how the veterinarian cared not only for the patient but also for the family during one of the most difficult moments of their lives. That experience inspired me to pursue a career dedicated to helping both animals and people.
Following a diagnosis of dyslexia and a desire to experience more of the world, I moved from England to Arizona to study Pre-Veterinary Sciences at the University of Arizona. After graduation, I planned to attend veterinary school, but the COVID-19 pandemic forced me to re-evaluate my options. During that process, I discovered St. Matthew’s University School of Veterinary Medicine. After researching the DVM program and speaking with students who shared experiences similar to mine, I decided to apply – and it turned out to be one of the best decisions I ever made.”
What ultimately led you to choose St. Matthew’s University for your veterinary education?
“What stood out to me about SMUSVM was the combination of academic excellence, personal support and community connections. From the moment I arrived on Grand Cayman for Basic Science, I felt welcomed and supported. I was able to thrive academically while becoming actively involved in student life through the Mentor Program, Student Government Association and Student Ambassador Program.
St. Matthew’s University provided an environment where I could grow both personally and professionally while pursuing my dream of becoming a practicing veterinarian.”
How did your experience at SMUSVM prepare you for your clinical training and veterinary career?
“At SMUSVM, I learned from experienced veterinarians and professionals from around the world who brought a wealth of knowledge and expertise into the classroom. Their guidance provided me with a strong foundation in veterinary medicine that prepared me well for clinical training.
Like for many Caribbean veterinary students, transitioning into clinical rotations felt somewhat intimidating. Joining a new group of students who have already formed friendships and professional relationships can be challenging. However, I always felt confident because of the knowledge, skills and mentorship I received from the faculty and support teams.”
How has your DVM education influenced your approach to patient care and your work today?
“My time at SMUSVM continues to influence my daily practice. Whether I am performing a physical examination, interpreting diagnostic results or helping a family through difficult decisions, I rely on the lessons I learned during my veterinary education. The technical skills were essential, but equally important were the communication and interpersonal skills I developed. Those skills are a critical part of veterinary medicine and continue to shape how I care for both my patients and their families every day.”
What advice would you give to other international students considering St. Matthew’s University for their veterinary education?
“I would strongly encourage international students to consider St. Matthew’s University School of Veterinary Medicine. In addition to receiving outstanding academic instruction and support from faculty, you’ll have the opportunity to experience everything Grand Cayman has to offer.
While every veterinary school teaches the fundamentals of veterinary medicine, few can offer experiences like working with blue iguanas, swimming with stingrays or helping rehabilitated sea turtles return to their natural habitat. Those experiences are truly unique!
Veterinary school is about more than academics. It’s also about building lifelong memories, gaining new perspectives and pursuing experiences that will stay with you throughout your career. My time at SMUSVM provided all of those things, and I will always be grateful for the journey.”
